On Wednesday, 18th Oct, Sarsfields U12 C3 had a magnificent team performance to narrowly overcome Midleton in a keenly contested match played under lights in Riverstown. In a tight fast game throughout, Sarsfields held out in the end to win by two points on a scoreline of 5:4 to 4:5. Midleton started very well and had three points on the board before Callum O’Connor scored the first goal of the night with a powerful shot to the net. Midleton replied with two goals, before Luke Hogan sent a rasper to the back of the net from a free following a foul on the hard working Danny McCarthy. Sarsfields trailed by three points at half-time. Adam Lane’s move to centre forward provided a formidable threat to the Midleton defence, where he helped to provide a good supply of balls to the full forward line where Danny McCarthy scored a goal to levels affairs. Midway through the second half, Luke Hogan scored his second goal from a free to push Sars into the lead for the first time. Both sides swapped points before Midleton scored a goal from long range. Darragh O’Flynn started to take control in midfield and worked hard to score a good point from play. Danny McCarthy scored his second goal and followed it up with a point from play. Sarsfields held a five point lead at the end of normal time, but Midleton ensured the game went down to wire with a goal two minutes into injury time to leave Sarsfields with a slender two point lead. Midleton pressed for the winning goal but the Sarsfields full back line were resolute in defending their goal, where they were ably lead by their team Captain Harry Chambers. After almost five minutes of injury, the referees final whistle was greeted with great scenes of joy from the Sarsfields support where all of the Sarsfields C3 panel contributed to a fantastic team display on the night. Fittingly, the U12 C3 trophy was presented to Team Captain Harry Chambers by Eoghan O’Connor, the Rebel Og board representative on the night, and also Harry’s former teacher and School principal. Pizza’s and chips were devoured in the clubhouse as a reward for the nights hard work. Sars Abù!
