What a wonderful exhibition of hurling was on show over the weekend as Sarsfields hosted the Annual Tim ‘Birdie’ Hayes Tournament in Riverstown.
Despite the weather we still had a Munster selection of note.
Teams from Na Piasaigh Limerick, Ballygunner Waterford with local Cork rivals Ballygarvan and Douglas completing the lineup.
Two competitions were played for namely a Shield and a Cup.
Each team played 3 games with the winners been those accruing the highest points in the round robin group.
The Shield was played with teams from Ballygarvan, Douglas, Ballygunner and Sarsfield which Sars coming out on top capturing the Shield trophy.
The Cup competition as played between Ballygunner, Na Piarsaigh, Douglas and Sarfield.
Each submitting 2 teams with aggregated scoring determining group positioning.
Following the round robin Ballygunner came on on top on scoring difference.
This tournament originated from the association of Tim ‘Birdie’ Hayes with the Club. Tim a member of the 1951 Sars County Champions played at left full back and a club stalwart all his life. Following his death a number of years back his wife Olly and Family presented this Cup in his memory.
Team manager Cathal O'Connor and Chairman Ian Graham were on hand to present the Cup to the Balygunner captain and the Shield to joint captains of the Sarsfields Team Michael Lynch and Patrick Bennett Wright.
